Distributor or logistics provider in Romania: choosing a local partner
Understand the differences between a distributor, agent, logistics provider and fulfilment provider before developing in Romania.
A distributor sells. A logistics provider moves, stores or prepares goods. Confusing these roles can delay Romanian market entry and create incorrect expectations from the first exchange.
Four functions to distinguish
The distributor usually buys for territorial resale, bears some commercial risk, develops customers and may hold stock. The commercial agent prospects and negotiates for the manufacturer without taking ownership of goods. The logistics provider arranges transport, warehousing, order preparation or delivery. The fulfilment provider executes operations, often for online trade, without necessarily creating demand.
A company may combine functions, but responsibilities must be checked and contracted. A national warehouse does not guarantee buyer access; a representative may open doors without providing installation, delivery or service.
Questions before choosing
- Who prospects and negotiates with the end customer?
- Who buys stock and bears unsold inventory?
- Which sectors, regions and channels are actually covered?
- Who invoices, collects payments and handles returns and complaints?
- Does the partner have comparable, verifiable references?
- Who handles translation, labelling, installation and after-sales?
- How are customer data and introduced prospects protected?
Gradual market entry
For many SMEs, a prudent sequence is testing demand, qualifying buyers, selecting a commercial partner, then adding suitable logistics. A local company follows where sales, staffing or operations justify it. This avoids prematurely financing an unproven structure.
