Food and private label: qualifying a Romanian partner

Private label accelerates launches but does not reduce safety, labelling, traceability or responsibility requirements. Qualify manufacturers before making market promises.

Turn the idea into specifications

Define category, recipe, allergens, process, packaging, shelf life, volumes, target price and countries. Specify who supplies raw materials, owns the formula and performs batch-release analyses.

Documents and capabilities to check

• facility registration and permits;
• food safety system and stated certifications;
• HACCP plan, traceability and recalls;
• microbiological and physicochemical analyses and batch certificates;
• allergen management and cross-contamination prevention;
• minimum quantities, production rate, capacity and lead times;
• packaging materials and food-contact compliance;
• labelling, languages, nutritional values and authorised claims.

Test before launching

Documentary shortlisting should be followed by samples, a complete quote and, if possible, a pilot batch. Contracts cover formula confidentiality, packaging approval, quality deviations, lead times, recalls and liability insurance.
